Antifreeze & Coolants for Automotive & Commercial Fleets

Engine failure, whether it be in industrial-size equipment or a commercial vehicle, can have a negative ripple effect across the entire operation. Tilley can help you determine the correct fluid for your vehicles, equipment, or fleet and develop a program to minimize the number of different products you have to stock and reduce your inventory cost.

We understand the importance of reliability in product quality and delivery. Using products from trusted manufacturers will allow your organization to maximize performance, decrease maintenance downtime and lower the total cost of ownership. Check out our selection of antifreeze and coolant products. If you can’t find the product you’re looking for, let us know. There’s a good chance we have it in our warehouse or we can source it for you.

Automotive Antifreeze and Coolants

Although the vast number of coolants and colors they come in can seem overwhelming when deciding what to keep in inventory, Tilley can help you properly identify which coolants to stock and how to stock them. Not only saving you time and space in your shop but also improving your bottom line and making sure the vehicles you service operate in peak condition.

Commercial and Heavy-Duty Antifreeze and Coolants

As engine, cooling, and exhaust after-treatment systems become more complex to meet tightening emission and fuel efficiency standards, so do the fluids that lubricate and cool them. Previously, conventional coolant was used on all different types of equipment, but OEM’s now have varying specifications and coolant technologies to meet new standards.

Couple those new standards with the demanding specifications, such as CAT EC-1 or Cummins Engineering Specification 14603 (CES 14603), and varying levels of silicates, phosphates, borate and nitrites and the management of your inventory can become challenging and expensive.

From organic acid technology (OAT) or nitrated organic acid technology (NOAT) to hybrid organic acid technology (HOAT) there are a lot of options to choose from. Let Tilley help you make a decision, save money and keep your equipment operating in peak condition by identifying the correct coolants to use, reducing the number of different coolants needed for your fleet, and providing stocking solutions to make sure you have what you need, where you need it, and when you need it.

Antifreeze FAQs

Does it matter which antifreeze I use?

Yes. Using the proper antifreeze/coolant ensures the cooling system is free of rust, corrosion, and buildup. With today’s more advanced and demanding engines, it is important you use an antifreeze/coolant that holds up to these demands so the engine can run like it was designed.

Is coolant the same as antifreeze?

Not exactly. Coolant is typically half water and half antifreeze and keeps the internals of an engine lubricated. Antifreeze is the chemical used to lower the freezing point of the liquid that circulates around the engine to prevent freezing.

Are all antifreeze and coolants the same?

Not at all!  Equipment manufacturers place different requirements on their cooling systems and need specific formulations of antifreeze/coolant to protect the engine and components. Make sure to check the OEM recommendation for your car, truck, or equipment to make sure you’re choosing the correct antifreeze.

Checking Antifreeze Vehicle

Does antifreeze color matter?

No! While colors may be similar from brand to brand, there is not a clearly defined standard. It can be a useful tool when using multiple different types of coolant in your shop but the name, specifications, and OEM recommendations of the antifreeze are the most important elements to consider when topping off or switching coolants.

Can you explain OAT vs NOAT Coolant, and Fully Formulated Antifreeze?

  • OAT stands for Organic Acid Technology and uses an additive pack which does not contain Nitrites for system protection like Prestone Command Heavy Duty Nitrite-Free Extended Life Coolant. The benefit of this formulation is that there is less concern for additive depletion and the coolant can have a longer service life if maintained properly.
  • NOAT stands for Nitrited-Organic Acid Technology and relies on the OAT technology but with added Nitrites to meet certain protection requirements for OEM’s like CAT-EC1 specification.  The coolant must also be tested to ensure proper levels of Nitrites remain in the coolant to provide sufficient protection as the Nitrite is depleted over time. Prestone Command Heavy Duty Extended Life Coolant uses this technology to meet these protection requirements.
  • Fully Formulated Antifreeze is a type of Inorganic Acid Technology that contains all necessary additives to protect heavy duty engines. These products typically contain the term “SCA” (Supplemental Coolant Additive) or Pre-Charged in the name like Prestone Command Heavy Duty Pre-Charged antifreeze. This coolant can have an extended service life with monitoring to ensure that sufficient additives remain in the fluid to provide adequate protection.
